KERNVILLE / UPPER KERN RIVER, Kern County — October 27, 2026. Visitors camping or enjoying the Kern River corridor should be aware of seasonal fire-safety rules. The federal Recreation.gov Headquarters Campground listing reproduces a Sequoia National Forest restriction order effective August 11 through November 30, 2026.
What activities are restricted?
The order generally prohibits building or using campfires and some stove fires outside designated campfire areas; smoking except in enclosed vehicles, buildings or specified areas; operating certain internal-combustion equipment outside designated roads and trails; and welding or use of open-flame torches outside specified areas. The exact geographic areas and exemptions are governed by the official forest order and its exhibits, not by a general assumption about every campsite.
Is any cooking equipment allowed?
The notice says holders of a valid California Campfire Permit are still subject to the restrictions but may use specified gas or liquid-fuel stoves and lanterns with shut-off valves, or certain propane-fueled campfire pits with on/off controls, in areas kept clear of flammable material. Wood-burning portable fire pits are not covered by that exception. A permit is not automatic permission for a wood campfire.
What should campers know about Headquarters Campground?
The federal listing places Headquarters Campground approximately six miles north of Kernville along the Kern River. It offers tent and RV sites without hookups or showers and warns that swimming in the Kern River is not recommended because of strong currents. The site has additional vehicle and occupancy rules; available spaces and nightly prices depend on the actual booking date.
Before a trip, contact the Kern River Ranger District at 760-376-3781 for current restrictions and conditions. The order is listed through November 30, but authorities can modify restrictions based on weather and fire risk. Visitors should also check recreation.gov before traveling for campsite status rather than assume any listing guarantees an open reservation.
