KERNVILLE, Kern County — October 27, 2026. A former golf course near the Kern River could eventually become a public park with walking paths, recreation courts and opportunities to enjoy the river. The Sierra Nevada Conservancy published a June 8, 2026 environmental filing for the Kern River Valley Community Park and River Recreation Planning Project, describing support for planning undertaken by the Kernville Chamber of Commerce.
What is being considered?
The proposed project area includes the former Kernville Golf Course at 9472 Burlando Road and neighboring land associated with a special-use permit in Sequoia National Forest. The preliminary ideas include disc golf, walking paths, hard-surface recreation courts and community gathering areas. Separate feasibility work would explore waterside amenities and potential river recreation improvements.
The study also looks at habitat restoration, stabilizing the riverbank, improving floodplain conditions and reducing wildfire fuels. The fact that a park could attract visitors does not remove the need to safeguard the river environment and access for residents.
What has actually been funded?
The state record is explicit: the funding action covers community engagement, design, feasibility and environmental studies. It does not authorize construction or land-disturbing work, and it does not commit state agencies to build the eventual park.
Any physical development would require additional agency review, decisions and funding. There is no verified opening date for a new park, disc-golf course or river feature in the filing, and California58 does not claim such facilities already exist at the site.
Why residents should participate
Residents can ask planners to assess parking, river safety, access for people with disabilities, long-term maintenance, local business impacts and the cost of water or land management. The most useful measure of progress will be the eventual public design, funding plan and permit documentation, not simply the launch of a feasibility study.
